WODONGA OPPORTUNITY FOR CATTLE YOUTH (2-Dec-09)
Angus Youth is offering young cattle enthusiasts the opportunity to take part in the annual Landfall Angus Youth National Roundup.
The 2010 Roundup will be at the Wodonga, Vic, Exhibition Grounds from January 14 to 17. Wodonga won the bid to host the 2010 Roundup because of its excellent facilities and central location.
The Roundup gives young people aged eight to 25 years a chance to learn more about the beef industry including livestock handling skills, herd management, marketing, grooming, genetics and fertility with specially targeted sessions for different age groups.
While the emphasis is on education, fellowship, fun and safety, several competitions will enable participants to test their skills. As well as the show classes, there will be awards for paraders, junior judges and fitters.
Several major awards and scholarships will be announced including an exchange trip to , scholarships for the SA heifer expo and cattle assessment schools, a registered Te Mania heifer, Landmark Ambassadors, clipping chute or clippers and the Matthew George citizenship award.
Tom Wilding-Davies, Roundup promotions officer, said the long-running event is a fun packed and informative few days with the opportunity to make some new friends but warned intending participants to get their entries in by December 4.
“Our aim is to educate as many young people as possible at the Roundup and we expect Wodonga to draw even more participants than the 143 at the Canberra Roundup earlier this year,” he said.
"The Angus Roundup has been running for 28 years and has become the largest single breed youth show in ,” said Mr Wilding-Davies.
“The Roundup is a super event that brings together participants from Australia-wide who share a common interest in beef cattle providing an exciting opportunity to learn from industry leaders while developing their life skills. It also allows participants to compete for some fantastic prizes, but most importantly to have fun and make some long lasting friendships,” he said.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own animals but there will be animals available for those who do not.
One of the highlights of the Roundup is the special dinner dance on the Saturday night. Participants, parents and industry representatives will have the opportunity to dress up, enjoy a delicious meal of Certified Australian Angus Beef (CAAB) at the Kinross Woolshed.
There will be committee members and parents on site for the duration of the Roundup to help with the supervision and needs of participants.
