Nerstane Merinos
Stud breeding commenced at Nerstane in 1965 with the aim of producing sheep capable of the highest possible production under commercial conditions. Currently the stud involves 2000 ewes which supplies 300-400 rams to clients annually.
Emphasis has always been placed on the relationship between clean wool production per head and fibre diameter (dollar value per head), fertility and easy care characteristics.
This goal has been refined over time in response to changes in commercial breeder and consumer requirements. The Nerstane Breeding Objective currently involves the following traits:
- Wool Quantity (Fleece weight)
- Wool fineness (Fibre diameter)
- Style (Crimp frequency and definition)
- * Softness and handle
- Fleece rot resistance (Colour and brightness)
- Worm resistance
- Body size
- Reproductive performance
- Conformation and Body type
The Nerstane breeding program which is based on the accurate assessment, both measured and visual of the above traits has enabled Nerstane to achieve an above average rate of genetic progress. This rate of progress has been enhanced through the wider use of superior Nerstane rams and ewes via artificial insemination and embryo transfer programs and the introduction of carefully selected genetic material from outside bloodlines. |
